well this is going to be my final year in highschool and i was going to get ready to buy a laptop soon cuz of college and i was wondering what kind of laptop builds are good? like what company should i get? i heard thinkpads are awesome but i dno im also looking for a price around 500-600, im not gonna be using it to play games just to surf the internet, dl movies and music, stream movies and school work. and i needed a laptop that would last me about 5-7 years cuz thats prolly how long ill stay in college.

There will probably be some major updates in 5-7 years so you may be forced to buy a new one. But the Thinkpad looks great.

It's $714 dollars though.

Yeah, Lenovo Thinkpads are of good quality and their customer support is only second to Apple. They're a bit more expensive (I find them $25-$50 more expensive than other manufacturor's laptops) but they have a few more features (special keyboard trackpoint and finger-scanner), plus better quality and support. Dell and HP make decent laptops, but they have comparably bad customer support.

You might want to look at other smaller comapnies, like CyberPowerPC. They usually specialize in gaming laptops, but their prices are better than the big-brands. You might want to consider building your own laptop, if you have knowledge in building desktops. The downfall is that you probably still won't save a lot compared to the smaller PC builders.

I wouldn't get Asus nor Acer, both brands are, in my opinion not the best on the market. Alienware is obviously out of your price range and wouldn't be useful for you (low battery-life, more used for gaming...).

I'd stick to your Thinkpad.
