4850 is faster than the 8800GTS by approximately 25% (regular 9800GTX is 20% slower than the 4850, and the 8800GTS is 5% slower than the 9800GTX).
If you can wait a bit, the 9800GTX+ is going to be faster than the 4850 at just a little higher price ($229 USD).

| The 4850 is just a downclocked version of the 4870, and thus seems to still have a lot of overclocking potential. I would say go for the 4850, grab an Accelero s1 cooler for about $20, and overclock that beast, it will far outperform the GTS.

Doesn't the 4870 use GDDR5 memory?

You're right, upon further inspection AMD scratched plans to use GDDR5 on the 4850.
Still, the 4850 overclocked will far outperform the 8800GTS overclocked.

They both appear to have the same specs and clocks, so either one will work just as good.

Although I haven't tried either brand, the VistionTek looks better because of it's Lifetime Warranty, compared to Diamond's 1 year warranty. Other than that, the specs are the same.

Yes it will work with that board, but you won't be able to run dual GPU's.

SLi is Nvidia's multi-GPU solution, and CrossFire is ATi's mutli-GPU solution. They don't go together.
If you would like to run dual GPUs, you're going to have to get an Intel-based (chipset) motherboard. If you want SLi, then you're going to have to switch out the graphics card.
