Have you tried resetting your modem/hub-thing/whatever-the-hell-it-is-you've-got? If that doesn't work, I suggest calling your ISP and asking them why your connection is acting like that.
I'll tell you right now, the first thing they're gonna ask you to do is reset your modem, so it's better to reset it then call them, just so you can tell them you've already done that.

Why have you got a switch and a router?
In any case that setup shouldn't be the problem as networking equipment is meant to be allowed to get setup like that.
Maybe a hardware fault somewhere, or a dodgy cable?

A switch won't extent the length of the wires :p
Unless you mean you had 2 cables and that provided the central point you needed to connect them. Either that or you're wireless?...
In any case it seems like it might be a fault somewhere in the cabling between the inside of the router and you're network. By that I mean, the adsl cable to the phone point seems fine, as you can still connect to the internet, although intermittently.
Theres always a chance that there is a faulty port on you're PC where you are connected via the cable, even though hardware faults such as that are far less likely.

Have you tried THIS?
Check the internet modem thingy there..
Might be your ISP too..
My old ISP made some modifications to their hardware, thus changing my IP every 10 minutes, making me disconnect from game servers etc..
