How do you close an application with Visual Basic 2008?

I know something like:

Code:
Shell("notepad", vbNormalFocus)

Would open an application.

How would you close one? Like click a button and your app closes (firefox, notepad, etc).

Note: This is Visual Basic 2008, so I do not think WM_DESTROY and WM_CLOSE work in this.
Ive been trying for like an hour and I just cannot get it to work.
