I was considering getting into Java programming...but I wanted to know if it helped out at all with hacking, or if it's just something to help perform tasks on a computer. I don't know that much about java, but I wanted to know if I should go with C++ or Java(Not considering hacking)

Like which language is more useful and such

Wrong section first off..
And it depends what you want to get into.
Java is more useful for apps that can be used in a browser, like on websites.
C++ is geared more towards building advanced programs.
I'd say Java has a wider range of use and is easier for beginners.

Right, sorry. I didn't know exactly which one to post it in.
So Java would be easier for beginners, but in the long run, whould Java or C++ be better?
I mean I guess I could start off with Java and get into C++ later on?

Yeah pretty much, all languages are similar is some way so learning one makes the next easier.
C++ is only useful if you specifically want to make something like photoshop, or a game.

And I would advise going with VB.NET first! (serious jk there)

Start with learning the basics of C/C++ by reading through a programming book.

After that, just experiment with open source things, and you'll eventually get the hang of it.

(I've read 2 ebooks and 1 real book on C/C++ so far, I still am having plenty of trouble with the syntax, as Noz knows; C++ is not easy to learn as a first language.)

Also2, x0r, you said you highly suggest not doing Java unless he wanted it to work for multiple operating systems, but doesn't C++ source compile extremely easy with little modification for a different OS?

Oh, ok. I'm doing Java programing at school right now, since we have to learn it, just a small hello world program and stuff.

I guess I'll start with C++ and stuff now.

Well since you have a class on it, I'd probably do Java, and after that class work on C++, so you don't overwork yourself.

I did that once reading a C++ book; I read about 3/4ths of it in one day, and forgot it all the next. Crying or Very sad

Also, with the Java programming, hopefully C++ will come to you more naturally since you've already learned a language.
