|
|
I am thinking of buying the Asus Maximus Motherboard which comes with a Q6600 Quad-Core Intel Processor at 2.4 Ghz per Core.
Information is here :
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131227
I am upgrading from [pictures below]
Thoughts or suggestions?
Price for the Asus will be either 255$ depending on whether or not I need RAM.
Buying 2 GB of Ballistic [SP?] DDR2 RAM will cost 90$, upping the price to about 350$.
If anyone [Madman, Cheetah, SaviourFamily, etc] could offer advice, that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

MB prices are horrifying these days.
Looks like a good board, but I'd also take a peek at some of the P35 boards as well.
e: those RAM prices sound high.

I'll admit the RAM is a little high, approximately 45$ each for 1GB, but could you tell me if mine is compatible already?
Any other thoughts, by the way?

I can't remember if the P4 had finally moved away from RD-RAM by then (pretty sure it was just the early ones) but you predate DDR2 for sure.
Yes you'll likely need ram, you can get 2gb of good stuff for 50-60 bucks, if not less.

Alright, thanks.
I have a 512 MB GDDR3 Radeon HD 2600 Pro, and I can run Crysis on High with fairly playable rates [20 FPS or so with tweaking] and I have a 3.0 Ghz Single core, so with a 2.4 Quad Core, I should have no issues.

| Crucial Ballistix 2x1gb is only 34.99 after rebate at Newegg right now. Not sure why you need a 250 dollar motherboard though, the CMOS Reset button sounds like a good idea if you overclock.

I might consider overclocking 2.6/2.8, plenty of fans and cooling with the board, and I do a lot of gaming, and I'm about to start getting into programming/game programming for fun, so I figure this is an extremely good deal.
I have a 180 GB Harddrive, and a 232 External, so this should be fine.

The only reason why you should get an Asus Maximus is if you want CrossFire X and you are an enthusiast. It's way too expensive for anyone other than gamers and enthusiasts. If you are going to get a Maximus Formula, upgrade your CPU. The latest X38 chipset is in that board. I suggest a good quality (Gigabyte P35) motherboard, that isn't so expensive.
As for RAM, I'm the budget dude, so I find RAM prices at $8 a GB. High performance RAM, at best prices (Patriot Extreme) are about $35 for 2GB.

Any other suggestions?
Do you think I can overclock to 3.0 and have it stable?
I read 17 pages of reviews and most said overclocking should be easy, just asking for extra opinions.
