Do you want the computer pre-built or do you want to build it yourself?
How much is your budget for the PC.
How much is your budget for the laptop?
If you build it yourself it will come out a lot cheaper. Not to mention better. And if you want a good gaming computer it is not necerally going to come cheap. An okay build would be around $1600

Since you'd not be building it, I'd recommend a laptop. They are portable, and have really gotten to be pretty good.
Although, laptops aren't for gaming (most of the time).

You can get yourself a good laptop (Not for gaming) from Best Buy for around 700 dollars. That way you can buy a PC that is more expensive/better and capable of gaming. So do you think your friend can build it for you or no? Because you would be able to get a much better computer if he could. Not to mention you can build it yourself. I can link you to some tutorials on how to build a computer once you get it. It's not as hard as people think.

I'd rate that as atleast an 8, it's a pretty good laptop for that price, and it even has a dedicated graphics card instead of integrated. 2gb ram, good for that price. the optical drive is actually a burner as well fyi.

I would rate this an eight. Considering the price and performance ratio. Not to mention it would do more than meet internet/emailing and basic needs. I'm pretty sure the person who you are going to give it to is not going to use all the 160G of space anyways. You shouldn't decide yet though. You might want to wait for some more input.
Also, I couldn't find a better computer for the price/performance ratio.
*Dance* Madman approves. Funny thing is I didn't look at your post and I rated it an 8 too. Also, this is an edit.
To summarize Madman's post; It has a disk drive.

No problem man. Now, what is your budget for the computer and you plan to play games with it right? And do you want it pre-built or do you want to build it yourself (recommended).
