I'm thinking of making a really good one. If I work on it a ton, could I someday get it better than FireFox? I bet there are ones out there not released that are better, just people don't even know about it.

Would VB 2008 be good enough to make like a simple web browser at least?

I don't feel like DLing Visual C++.

Have any of you made web-browsers, and how'd it go?

To be truthful, it would be quite easy to create a web browser in .NET. All you do, really, is throw a web-browser control on the form, set the property, and there you go.

You could spice it up, with things like a back and forward button (this requires actually knowing how to program, I've already got a basic algorithm in my head, though I doubt I'll ever do anything--I'm choosing not to tell you, because I want to see if you are a good enough developer to do this on your own.)

Honestly though, I doubt you'll ever be as good as FireFox. You might not even be able to beat IE 6 or 7, but then again, you're a single (unexperienced?) developer, working on a big project such as this; you can't expect to get far.

If you want to do things like this, you should get some friends together who can program pretty well, and possibly start something off, but your best bet is just going to be develop smaller things. Don't get your hopes up about creating things like FireFox, because the reason that so many people use it, is because it's so good. Why is it so good? Because incredibly experienced people (plural) spent a lot of time on it.

Until you write the entirety of one on your own (renderer, etc) then it's not yours.

Just give up the idea and go write a plugin for firefox, as ego crushing as it may be.

Apparently you didn't read what he said.. The rendering engine that handles the output that you see on screen when a website is loaded is not yours. You are using a premade control by Microsoft, most likely, which just renders your browser to work just like Internet Exploder. He said that unless you make your own engine then you are not making anything worth while. Which is the truth. Anyone can make a browser using the premade control within 5 seconds. It's not hard.

It may be useful, but as to learn IMO, for some sort of programs, not for trying to beat any popular Web Browser, starting for FF.

CanGoBack -> GoBack

CanForward -> GoForward

Navigate(" ")

Refresh

are easy to control Confused

If you just drag the component then you havent done browser by urself, you are just borrowing iexplorer's ocx. (or any other webbrower's ocx)

Code:
That will result in epic failure for sure

Exactly? He was pointing out that there is no such thing as 'Visual Basic C++'; It's Visual C++.

Ok, I apologize for even throwing out those suggestions, as I didn't know much about WebBrowser controls at the time.

I've found out that you can just do

Code:

mywebbrowser.Back();
mywebbrowser.Forward();

I figured that you might actually have to do some programming! Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

Anyways, something that simple, as Wiccaan has stated previously (maybe not here), is nothing to be proud of.
