This card is targeted towards the people in the middle, so I would give an estimate of $200 being the ceiling for the regular version. The card was intended to replace the 8800GS, which is the card that fills the gap until the 9600GT is released.
9600GT>8800GT>8600GT
As for the quote, I don't know if you trust Wikipedia, but the price does seem reasonable, though I'm not betting on it.
Oh, and I found aquote:
"The 9600 GT will be a whole new card not based on the 8800 GT PCB. Price point should be at $169 in retail/etail and plans are to carry this GPU throughout 2008."

You got it all wrong.
8800GT > 9600GT> 8600 GT

I think I was typing about the price-to-performance ratio, rather than the cards going head to head. Yes, I know that the 8800GT is a very good card. I think once NVIDIA releases drivers for the 9600GT, you'll probably see a performance boost, so the tested version probably has a lower performance than the manufactured version. |
