Cheat Engine

Hi,

Ive been going through the tutorial which comes with cheat engine and yeah im upto the step (i think its six) which is about pointers. But im having trouble where it says to find the hex value of the value in between the [ ]. Ive got a picture below which shows it. It says EAX in between the [ ] but below that it says that the value of eax is the same as the original memory path??? lol whats up with that?? Like does it normally say EAX for everyone else??

new scan.
set type to 4 byte if it isn't already set

scan for the value in eax: 008f5204 (tick the HEX checkbox)
and click first scan

Tip: I suspect address 0045cc34 contains that value
Try to find out how I know that without having to scan

is it the same because all of the [ ] equal the same?? So why cant you just do a search for the hex of the original memory address?? Why do you have to go find out what writes to this address if its just the original memory address??

because it doesn't have to be the original memory address
it might just as well be [eax+204]
in which case you'd have to look for 008f5000

The tutorial is set up so it's easier to find in that step so it's always eax, but in other games its always going to be different, with different offsets. The reason you have to find out what writes/accesses the addresses is because the addy isnt usually going to be static, so you must find a static pointer so you dont have to researc everytime you load the game.
