VC++ express edition is free, download -> register product -> enter the key sent to your email.

I suggest you to get dev-c++.

And for the difference part, vb is less powerful than c++.

Yes, you can, openGL or directx.

C++ isn't easy to learn, like the "Teach yourself C++ in 21days" requires you to read 5~10 hours for one day/page.

There are many possiblities of c++, likewise said, make an fps or a game.

You can make games in VB too, http://www.vbforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=2

Dev-C++ is horrible, in my opinion as well as the opinions of many others on these forums. The IDE isn't that bad but the compiler is a ported version of MinGW. (Which sucks.)

Stick with Visual Studio 2005 (or higher) for your computer. I personally use VS2005 for the IDE as well, but the suggested IDE seems to be Code::Blocks on these forums.

C++ has little to no limitations. You can code full blown games in it such as what you see in the mainstream of the game industry today. You will need to learn some graphics rendering programming such as DirectX or OpenGL, there are others but these are the main two seen today.

- DirectX is made by Microsoft and is Windows only natively. You can get it to run on Linux, but it's not supported. DirectX comes with a ton of interfaces already created such as, Video, Sound, Input, etc.

- OpenGL is the preferred and is cross-platform. It is a bit less packed with things like DirectX is though. You will need to find or create your own interfaces for various things such as sound and input.

And yes, you can make things like Half-Life in C/C++.

You wont be able to do it in a day so don't get discouraged and give up after a day of trying. Just study, take your time, and take a break if you get frustrated.

The only reason i would suggest Code::Blocks in this case is low hard drive space. I was in that position a few weeks ago and didn't have enough room for VS

If you can spare 500MB then get VC++ 2008 Express. It's Free

If you can't take the time to download a decent compiler try tinycc.

Use a download manager like Flashget, GetRight, or IDM. (Or some other one you find suitable.) You can cap the download speed to something suitable for everyone on the router so that you can eventually get what you need, without lagging the others to hell.
