After reading the win32 programmers' reference, I can't really figure out how are hotkeys and keyboard accelerators different in terms of function. Can anyone tell me how they are different and which to use in what kind of situations? Thanks.

hotkeys (I assume the ones by RegisterHotKey) are global; they will signal your program even when your window is not active/focused

accelerators only work when your window is in the foreground
