How do I cheat?

hey everyone, I need a little help with the tomb raider game. I am able to find the address for the shotgun ammo but for some reason I cannot use "find out what writes to this address" for it. I always get an error that said

"Access violation at address 0050A8D2 in module 'Cheat Engine.exe'. Write of address 0000021C."

But I am able to do the read/access for the address. Can someone help me this so I can use the write operation. Or perhaps someone can show me a way to find the pointer using only the read/access methods.
