If you mean an engine (game maker?) against a self build engine (raw?), if you're going to make a game, i prefer learn before to build my self an engine (that's what i'm doing now), then when you have enough experience, you can use a third party engine to speed up your works.
If you mean a external tool for making games like rpg maker, then depends on the software quality

I mean do you prefer using game maker to make games. Or do you prefer to make games from scratch, from nothing but raw code. Like I know people who like to use wxDev-Cpp instead doing it from scratch

by game maker i think he means any program that makes games (GM, RPG XP, and more...) umm i dont know... i only know how to make games using game maker (actual GM not a program that makes games)
i guess everybody will say game makers, easier Smile

I like game maker too. Im actually currently trying to make a game. I just need to learn how to make good sprites xP

Raw code > 3rd party engine

My friend actually showed me Game Maker when I showed him my Pong game. He's in the makes of making like a 2d CS game, but I think it's just stupid. If you want to call yourself a programmer, you should code your own things.

the things you can do in game maker are limited but things that u can do by programming are not limited

Yea, but right now Im learning how to make games in C++. And I just made a maze game in game maker, i followed the tutorial Razz Im gonna make my own game now though. I wish I had the pro edition though

Use/mod a game engine. Unreal Engine looks good. YOU NEED to know a programming language.
