Summary0000052: CE 5.4.2 - cannot search
DescriptionI am trying to find a value in Warlords Battlecry III ( patch).
I open the process, type in the value, select "2 bytes" and I start the search.
The search goes thru, but it does not end - seems to be stucked at the end until I hit "Cancel" or close Cheat Engine. (see attached screen shot how it looks).
If I hit "Cancel", the button will turn into a "Terminating scan..." button, but again - nothing happens; all I can do is to close CE.
There is a way to get CE work again (see under "Additional information", however it is only temporary - the next time I start CE, select the process and attempt to search again, the same thing starts happening all over again.
Additional InformationGetting CE work again and repeating the error
1. I reset CE via the start menu.
2. I start CE and click "No" two times that pops up during the first run.
3. (this is not needed, but this is something I do every time CE starts for the first time) Go to Settings->General setting and uncheck "Hide some/all windows..." and check "Save window positions" and click ok.
4. I select the Battlecry III.exe process, start a search for a 2-bytes value.
5. At this stage it either works right away, or I get the exception described in another bug report: http://www.cheatengine.org/mantis/view.php?id=49 (after this exception I have to start a new search again, and then it will work).
6. I close CE and start it again.
7. I repeat step 4, and this time the search does not finish - as described in in "Description".
 - CE search will hang even if I restart my PC between two CE runs (unless I reset the CE settings via the start menu, of course).
 - The task manager shows that CE is not using any processor time (utilization is 0%).
 - TSearch has no issues whatsoever.

Harddisk led is also off ?

Csimbi (reporter)

Hi Dark Byte,
the truth is: I can't tell.
I have a RAID card (3ware 9650SE-8LPML) - and even though it has several LED connectors (one for each disk), none of them are connected to the one in front my my box.
It was not much of a help, was it?

Csimbi (reporter)

It seems that this problem is not specific to my home PC.
I have the exact some problem on my laptop.
Lenovo T61p/XP SP2

Dark Byte (developer)

I got this when there wasn't enough diskspace left on the disk for the scanfiles

Csimbi (reporter)

My home PC:
I have 4Gigs of RAM, XP seems to use only 2.75Gigs.
I have 8 identical disks (250G each) in a RAID 6 array (using a 3ware controller).
The primary partition is C, the size is 32Gigs). It has the XP on it, Cheat Engine, the page file, the TEMP directory plus all the programs I have installed.
There is about 10Gigs free space left (on the primary partition).

My laptop:
It is a Lenovo T61p. It has a single 160G drive, which is encrypted, the whole drive as a single primary partition.
This has also XP on it, and it has 2Gigs of RAM.
The amount of free space is about 128Gigs.

Hope it helps and a fix is on its way soon ;-)
The inability to search with CE is bugging me a lot nowadays.
Thank you.

One more question, when this happens, is the rest of the gui still usable, or do you hear a beep sound when you click anywhere? (if beep, use alt+tab to switch to ce, that sometimes pops up a hidden window which might contain a more descriptive error)

As far as I remember, no sounds, nothing. The rest of the GUI seems ok (though so far, I always closed it right away to avoid problems).
Let me check quickly.

I just searched for 23 in the Firefox.exe process and search "ended" as usual ("Cancel" button that can be turned into a "Terminating scan..." button and no results are shown).
Now, I try ALT+TAB, back again, memory view, adding addresses manually... I see no hidden windows, no errors, the rest seems to be working properly; only the search seems to be affected.

I just pinpointed the problem and it happens when there is a write error in the folder CE places the tmp files.
I've fixed it so it won't deadlock anymore(in the SVN), but that won't fix your original problem of getting an error at the point where it writes the results.
Are you sure the folder CE is in is writable with the account CE is running as. (Cheat engine has to run as an administrator or the folder ce is in must have it's security attribute set to writable to everyone. Anything less can and will cause errors)

I have XP, so there is no such thing as "running as" (I assume it's a Vista thing).
I have administrator privileges, but there is full access to the disk anyway, so it should not be needed.

BTW: CE is installed to C:\PROGRAMS\CE (so, I hope you are not hard-coding paths).
I can see two TMP files there, about 52k each:

Dark Byte (developer)

well, that the TMP files exist is one thing, but if it's really a 'protected folder' and not using a admin account then creating and writing the TMP file the first time is no problem, but trying to delete it or opening for write is a problem.

The setup allows you to specify the path, try c:\ce instead
I'll see if I can make a temp version which will give a bit more details

And yes, xp does have a run as administrator option,. Create a shortcut of the exe (program files shortcut is one) in the properties shortcut tab there's an 'advanced' button. In the window that pops up you can choose "Run with different credentials"
When you then run it a window pops up asking how to run it. Make sure you do not have the option selected that says "Protect my computer and data"

My account has Administrator privileges.
